Summary
- Choose between a/an (one of many, first mention), the (specific or known), and no article (general plural/uncountable) depending on whether the noun is specific and countable.
Structure

Examples
- I need a pen. — Where is the pen I gave you?
- Dogs are loyal, but the dog next door barks all night.
- She plays the piano and enjoys music.
- We stayed in a hotel; the hotel was lovely.
Common mistakes
- • Don't use 'a/an' with uncountables: NOT 'an advice' → 'some advice.'
- • Don't drop 'the' for the only one of something: 'the internet', 'the government'.
