   The exhausted climber thanked each rescuer who had joined the search.

Formed from rescue + the agent suffix -er. Rescue entered English through Anglo-French rescure, from re- + escure ("to shake off, drive away"), ultimately from Latin excutere. A rescuer is literally the person who performs a rescue.
