Formed from mono-, 'one,' + cotyledon + -ous. Cotyledon comes through Latin from Greek kotyledon, 'cup-shaped hollow,' applied in botany to an embryonic seed leaf. Monocotyledonous therefore literally means 'having one cotyledon.'
