Borrowed from French pelisse, from Late Latin pellicia, 'garment made of skins,' ultimately from Latin pellis, 'skin or hide.' It is a historical doublet of pilch. The name first emphasized fur lining or trim, then broadened to fashionable women's and children's outer garments.
