Etymology
Named for London military outfitter Francis Joseph Stohwasser, who patented the gaiter design with George Birtchnell Winter in the 1890s. The overlapping leather covering, tightened at the calf and ankle by a helically wound strap, became known by the maker's surname and was widely used by mounted troops.
