   From the hilltop belvedere, visitors could see the harbor and the distant cliffs.

Borrowed in the sixteenth century from Italian belvedere, literally "beautiful view," from bel ("beautiful") + vedere ("to see"). The name passed from a scenic viewpoint to a building or raised part of a building made for enjoying one.
