Borrowed through Chilean Spanish chucao from Mapudungun chukaw, the bird's name, often treated as an imitation of its conspicuous call. Historical spellings include chucau and Darwin's cheucau. Chucao tapaculo is the current English common name for Scelorchilus rubecula.
