   Dorian stepped onto the dais so that the painter could study his pose.

From Middle English deis, through Anglo-Norman and Old French deis, 'high table or platform,' from Late Latin discus, 'table,' and ultimately Greek diskos, 'disc or tray.' The name shifted from the honored table to the raised platform on which it stood.
