From Middle English ewer, borrowed from Anglo-Norman or Old French ewer or eawer, ultimately from Latin aquarium, 'a vessel or place for water,' from aqua, 'water.' Ewer is therefore a historical doublet of aquarium, though the two words developed very different modern uses.
