Borrowed from French felicitation, from feliciter, 'make happy or congratulate,' which continues Late Latin felicitare, 'make happy.' The family ultimately rests on Latin felix, 'happy, fortunate, or fruitful.' The plural felicitations became a formal equivalent of congratulations.
