Simplified etymology

Gnu entered English in the late 18th century from a Khoikhoi and San name for the animal. The name may imitate the wildebeest’s alarm call.

Borrowed through Dutch gnoe from Khoekhoe t'gnu or a related form, probably imitative of the animal's grunting call. English permits both gnu and gnus as plurals.
