Simplified etymology

Hassle originated in the late 19th century as a dialect word meaning “hack or saw at.” Its origin is unknown, but it may be a blend of haggle, from an Old Norse word meaning “hack” or “mangle,” and tussle, a late Middle English word probably identical in origin with Germanic tousle.

Of uncertain origin, American English of the mid-twentieth century; perhaps a blend of haggle and tussle, or from a Southern US dialect word for 'to pant'.
