   The hydrographer recorded the channel depths before revising the nautical chart.

Formed from hydrography + -er. Hydrography combines Greek hydor, 'water,' with -graphia, 'writing or description,' and came to mean the measurement and charting of waters. A hydrographer is the person who performs that work.
