   The importunate visitor continued asking to be admitted despite repeated refusals.

From Middle French importun, ultimately from Latin importunus ("inconvenient, troublesome, unsuitable"), with the English adjectival ending -ate influenced by related forms. Its sense developed from being troublesome or untimely to pressing a request with unwelcome persistence.
