Etymology
From Latin lemures ('spirits of the dead'). Linnaeus applied the name Lemur to nocturnal primates in the eighteenth century, reportedly alluding to their ghostlike appearance and nighttime activity. The name later broadened to the related primates native to Madagascar and nearby islands.
