From perambulate + the agent or instrument suffix -or, literally "one or something that walks around." Perambulate comes from Latin perambulare, from per- ("through") + ambulare ("to walk"). The word named both a distance-measuring wheel and, from the nineteenth century, a wheeled baby carriage.
