Formed from perpendicular + -ity. Perpendicular comes from Latin perpendicularis, based on perpendiculum, 'a plumb line,' from perpendere, 'weigh or examine carefully.' A hanging plumb line supplied the model for exact verticality and, by geometry, a right angle.
