Simplified etymology

Requiem comes from Latin requies, “rest,” the opening word of the Mass for the Dead in the phrase Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, “Grant them, O Lord, eternal rest.” Requies is related to Latin quietus, “quiet.”
