Etymology
Formed from self- and gratulation. Gratulation came through Middle English gratulacyon from Latin gratulatio, 'a rejoicing or congratulation,' from gratulari, 'to show joy or congratulate,' ultimately related to gratus, 'pleasing, welcome, thankful.' The compound has been recorded since the late seventeenth century.
