From tax plus gatherer, literally a person who gathers taxes. The compound is recorded from the mid-16th century. Tax comes through Anglo-French taxe from Medieval Latin taxa, while gatherer is the agent noun from Old English-derived gather. Tax gatherer and tax-gatherer are spacing variants; tax collector is now more usual.
