From dis- plus encumbrance, on the model of disencumber, 'to free from a burden.' Encumber entered English through Anglo-French from a word for an obstruction or dam. Disincumbrance reflects the historical in- spelling of incumbrance; modern dictionaries treat disencumbrance as a variant of disencumberment.
