Recorded as yabblins in Francis Kildale Robinson's nineteenth-century Whitby glossary and as the northern variant yeblins in Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary. It belongs to the ablins family meaning "perhaps," historically formed from able + the adverbial suffix -lings or -lins; the initial y- occurs in northern forms.
