Etymology

From Middle English yon, inherited from Old English ġeon ("that or those over there"), from Proto-Germanic *jaino-. Cognates include German jener and Gothic jains ("that"). The adverbial use developed later as a shortening of yonder. It is now chiefly dialectal, archaic, or literary.
