Etymology
From Old French assaillant, the present participle of assaillir, 'to attack,' ultimately from Latin assilire, 'to leap upon.' The Latin verb combines ad- ('toward') with salire ('to jump'). English first used assailant adjectivally and then as a noun for one who attacks.
