Etymology

Borrowed from Malay banteng, the local name for the wild ox. The accepted scientific name is Bos javanicus; Darwin and other nineteenth-century zoologists often used Bos sondaicus, now treated as an older synonym. Its domesticated form is known as Bali cattle.
