   Bottle-shaped kilns glowed across the deserted brickfield after dark.

A compound of brick + field. The word became especially associated with open areas where suitable clay was excavated, molded into bricks, and fired in nearby kilns; many such brickfields once lay at the industrial edges of British towns.
