Etymology

A transparent compound of chimney and the directional suffix -ward, literally 'turned toward the chimney.' The suffix descends from Old English -weard, from a Proto-Germanic form meaning 'turned toward.' H. G. Wells attested chimneyward as an adverb in The Invisible Man (1897), where a burning paper is lifted toward and then up a chimney.
