Simplified etymology

Chintz entered English in the early 17th century from Hindi chīṃṭ, “spattering” or “stain,” referring to the patterned cloth. Its first English form was chint, with the plural chints; that plural was subsequently reshaped as chintz.

Borrowed from Hindi chint, 'spotted or printed cloth,' from a word for a sprinkling or stain. European traders applied the name to vividly printed Indian cottons imported from the seventeenth century onward; English later used it especially for glazed floral furnishing fabric.
