From Middle English confederacie, through Anglo-Norman confederacie, from Latin confoederatio, 'an agreement or league.' The Latin verb confoederare meant 'to unite by treaty,' from con- ('together') + foedus ('treaty, compact'). Confederation is a doublet from the same Latin source.
