From Anglo-Norman conspiratour, ultimately from Latin conspirator, 'one who agrees or plots with others,' from conspirare, 'to agree, combine, or conspire.' Conspirare joins con-, 'together,' with spirare, 'to breathe,' giving the original image of people breathing or acting together.
