From Late Middle English inception, borrowed from Latin inceptio, 'a beginning or undertaking,' from inceptus, the past participle of incipere, 'to begin.' Incipere combines in-, 'in or on,' with capere, 'to take,' so the underlying idea is taking something up or beginning it.
