   archaic, usually plural: a tangled or matted lock of hair, once fancifully attributed to elves

   Wind and neglect had twisted her hair into bristling elflocks.

Formed from elf + lock. Folklore blamed nocturnal elves for tangling the hair of people and animals, so the term came to denote the resulting matted locks whether or not magic was implied.
