Etymology
From Old English matt, meatt ('mat'), an early Germanic borrowing of Late Latin matta ('mat of rushes'), itself probably of Semitic origin (compare Hebrew miṭṭāh 'bed'). The verb sense 'to become tangled' arose from the appearance of woven matting.
