   The neighboring states formed an entente to coordinate trade and regional security.

An unadapted borrowing from French entente ("understanding, agreement"), from entendre ("to understand"). It is a doublet of intent: both ultimately descend through French from Latin intendere, but their meanings developed along different paths.
