   The estancia raised cattle on thousands of hectares of open grassland.

Borrowed from Spanish estancia 'stay, dwelling, station, estate,' from estar 'to stand or remain,' ultimately Latin stare 'to stand.' In the River Plate region the word became the usual name for a large rural property devoted especially to cattle or sheep.
