Ranch entered American English in the early 19th century from Spanish rancho, meaning “a group of persons eating together.” It originally referred to a building rather than to land.

From American Spanish rancho, originally a group eating together or their temporary camp, then a herders' hut or small farm. English ranch developed in the nineteenth-century American West for a large livestock property and then produced the verb.
