Etymology
Coined in nineteenth-century anthropology from exo-, 'outside,' + -gamy, 'marriage,' ultimately from Greek gamos. John Ferguson McLennan introduced the term in 1865 for rules requiring marriage outside a group; biology later extended it to outbreeding between unrelated individuals.
