   an organism or cell with two identical alleles at a specified genetic locus

   A homozygote inherits the same allele from each parent at that locus.

From homo- ("same") + zygote. English biologists William Bateson and Edith Rebecca Saunders introduced the term in 1902 while describing Mendelian inheritance.
