Etymology
Recorded in English from the sixteenth century, perhaps from an Irish or Gaelic battle cry; compare Irish abú and Scottish Gaelic ubub, cries expressing encouragement, contempt, or alarm. A repeated cry became a name for confused shouting and then for noisy commotion generally.
