From iniquity + -ous. Iniquity came through Old French iniquite from Latin iniquitas ('unfairness, injustice'), based on iniquus ('unequal, unjust'), from in- ('not') + aequus ('equal, level, just'). The literal inequality developed into moral wrongness and gross injustice.
