Simplified etymology

Lobster has been used since Old English and ultimately derives from Latin locusta, a word that could mean either a lobster or a locust. The two English animal names therefore share the same linguistic source.

From Middle English lopster, from Old English loppestre or lopustre. Its deeper origin is uncertain; proposals connect the first element with Old English loppe ("spider") or Latin locusta, which could denote a crustacean, plus the old agent suffix -ster.
