From Middle English lofte, 'air, sky, upper room,' borrowed from Old Norse lopt, 'air, sky, upper chamber,' from Proto-Germanic *luftuz. It is a doublet of lift and is related to aloft. The architectural sense developed from the idea of an elevated space.
