Manufactory appeared in the mid-17th century as a name for a building where goods were produced. It comes from Latin manufactus, “made by hand,” formed from manus, “hand,” and factus, “made,” and remained more usual than factory in this sense until the Victorian era.

From manufacture (from Latin manū 'by hand' + factura 'a making', from facere 'to make') with the suffix -ory denoting a place. An older term for a factory.
