From Middle English mairaltee, from French mairalte, naming the office of a maire ('mayor'). Mayor ultimately comes from Latin maior ('greater, superior'), the comparative of magnus ('great'); the civic title developed for a town's chief officer, and mayoralty for the office or tenure.
