Etymology

Formed from mineralogy + the specialist suffix -ist, after French mineralogiste. Mineralogy itself derives from mineral + -logy, the latter ultimately from Greek logos ("study or account"); a mineralogist is therefore a specialist in the scientific study of minerals.
