Etymology

Borrowed in the seventeenth century from Powhatan aposoum, 'white animal,' from a Proto-Algonquian compound meaning approximately 'white dog.' The spelling was later reshaped under the influence of Latin-looking forms; possum arose by dropping the unstressed first syllable.
