   The outer flowers produced orthospermous fruits with a nearly straight inner seed face.

Formed from ortho-, from Greek orthos ("straight, correct"), and -spermous, from Greek sperma ("seed"). Nineteenth-century botanists used the term in classifications of the carrot family for fruits whose seed face is straight.
