   The court panegyrist celebrated the ruler's victories while passing over every failure.

Formed from panegyric + -ist. Panegyric comes through Latin panegyricus from Greek panegyrikos ("of a public assembly or festival"), based on panegyris ("general assembly"). Speeches at such gatherings produced the later sense of elaborate public praise.
