Simplified etymology

Eulogy, recorded from late Middle English, is formed from Greek elements meaning “speaking well”: eu means “well,” and logos means “speech,” “word,” or “reason.” It consequently came to denote an expression of praise.

Through Late Latin eulogia from Ancient Greek eulogia ("praise, good speaking"), formed from eu- ("good, well") + logos ("word, speech"). Its modern dominant sense is praise of someone who has died.
