New Latin Pithecanthropus, formed from Greek pithekos, 'ape,' and anthropos, 'human being': literally 'ape-human.' The name was used for a hypothetical human ancestor and later for the Java fossils named Pithecanthropus erectus; twentieth-century taxonomy placed those fossils in Homo erectus.
